Scarlett Johansson was born on November 22, 1984, at New York City New York. She is an American actress/singer whose versatility has earned her recognition in a variety of kinds of genres, from thrillers to action films to period dramas. Johansson was born in New York City, and was raised by an father who was an architect and her mother, a producer. Hunter, her twin brother and She were all the smallest of four kids. When she was a child she began to develop a passion for acting. She began auditioning commercials at the age seven. She enrolled in the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute shortly following and then attended the Professional Children's School, Manhattan to further her education. In the Off-Broadway production Sophistry she co-starred with Ethan Hawke. She then had her first appearance in a film on screen in North (1994) which was directed by Rob Reiner, at age nine. Johansson subsequently appeared in Just Cause (1995) but her first breakthrough came with Manny & Lo (1996) which was a film about abandoned sisters who escape. Her next film won praise for her performance as a teenager who has suffered a disfiguring accident in The Horse Whisperer (1998) and she gained further attention as cynical teen who is a solitary Rebecca in Ghost World (2001). Smith's parents aided her in getting her first role in the acting world at age six. Smith was in the Dannon commercial for television. Like many young actresses she began her career in theatre. In addition to other projects around the USA she also made her theatrical debut in Wildflower. She graduated from her Stonestreet Studios Conservatory of the New York University Tisch School of the Arts.
